Hobart tops Vassar 70-68 on last-second jumper

GENEVA, N.Y.—Junior Alex Moesch made a turnaround jumper from the middle of the lane with 1.8 seconds remaining to give Hobart a 70-68 Liberty League victory over Vassar in Bristol Gym tonight.
 
With 74 seconds left in the game, junior Dorian Paki made 1-of-2 free throws, pulling Hobart into a tie at 68. Vassar missed a shot to claim the lead with just over a minute remaining. The Statesmen missed a chance at the lead with about 40 seconds to go and the Brewers misfired on another chance with about 15 seconds left setting up Moesch's heroics.
 
Moesch led four Statesmen in double digits with 14 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Paki netted 13 points, grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and handed out a career-high four assists. Sophomore Monty Nedd posted 12 points and a game-high four steals. Sophomore Allen Mordi logged 10 points and matched Paki's eight boards.
 
Vassar's Shea Fitzgerald led all scorers with 26 points. He also pulled down a team-high seven boards and dished out a game-high seven assists. Parker Neuenhaus was the only other Brewer in double figures, finishing with 12 points.
 
GAME RECAP
First Half: Hobart 37, Vassar 34
  • Neither team led by more than six points in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Six minutes into the game, Vassar took a 13-7 lead on a 3-pointer by Eric Zhang.
  • Hobart trailed by three as the game clock ticked under five minutes, but the Statesmen used an 11-2 run to build a 37-31 advantage with 1:25 to go to halftime.
  • The Brewers scored the final three points of the half to go into the break trailing by three.
  • Shea led all scorers at the intermission with 12 points.
 
Second Half: Hobart 70-68
  • The Statesmen built the largest lead of the game for either team in the early moments of the second half.
  • Paki opened the scoring with an old fashion 3-point play and Moesch followed with a 3-pointer from deep, giving the home team a 43-34 lead.
  • The Brewers kept the Statesmen from breaking the game open, slowly erasing Hobart's lead.
  • With 2:25 left Neuenhaus tied the game at 67.
  • Sebastian Medina put the Brewers in front, making 1-of-2 at the line, with 1:46 left, setting the stage for the drama of the final minute.

  • Moesch has made at least one 3-pointer in 29 consecutive games.
  • Nedd reached double digits in the scoring column for the fifth consecutive game.
