Roos edge Herons 2-1

CANTON, N.Y.—The William Smith ice hockey team dropped a hard-fought SUNYAC contest to Canton 2-1 at The Roos' House this afternoon.
 
First-year Lilly Relyea scored the goal for the Herons. It was her third goal in the last four games. Junior Mia Iwicki played just over 58 minutes in goal and made 22 saves.
 
Riley Andzel and Danika Lalonde had two points each in the win for the Roos. Molly Lenihan played all 60 minutes in goal and made 28 saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • William Smith is now 11-13-0 with a 7-6-0 mark in SUNYAC play. The Herons enter the final day of the regular season tied for third in the conference standings with 16 points.
  • Canton improves to 13-8-3 with a 5-6-2 mark in conference play. The Roos are fifth in the league standings, three points behind the Herons.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • William Smith finished the game with a 29-24 edge in shots on goal, including an 11-6 advantage in the third period.
  • William Smith was 0-for-1 on the power play and the Roos were 1-for-1 with the extra attacker.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Canton opened the scoring at the 9:34 mark of the first period. Andzel collected a pass from Lalonde and slipped a shot past Iwicki. It was her eighth goal of the season.
  • Lalonde gave The Roos a 2-0 lead at the 17:23 mark of the second period. She backhanded a shot from a tight angle over the goalie's right shoulder and into the upper corner of the cage.
  • After a scoreless second period, Relyea broke up the shutout bid at the 3:33 mark of the final frame. She collected a loose puck behind the net, deked out the goalie and stuffed the puck across the goal line. It was her fourth goal of the season.
  • The Herons controlled the final 10 minutes, but they could not find the equalizer as Canton held on for the 2-1 victory.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will conclude its regular season tomorrow, Feb. 21, when it takes on Oswego. The Herons and Lakers are tied for the third spot in the league standings.
