Schimizzi’s hat trick leads #1 Hobart past Fredonia 7-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart senior forward Dominic Schimizzi recorded a career-high four points as the top-ranked Statesmen cruised to a 7-0 victory over Fredonia in a SUNYAC contest at The Cooler this afternoon. With the win, Hobart concludes the regular season with a 25-0-0 overall record and an 18-0-0 record in SUNYAC play.
 
Schimizzi was one of four Statesmen to finish with multi-point games. Juniors Conor Lally had three assists, while juniors Chris Duclair (1g, 1a) and Logan Gotinsky (1g, 1a) had two points each. Senior Damon Beaver played all 60 minutes in goal and made 19 saves as he earned his fifth shutout of the season.
 
Charles-Anthony Barbeau started and played 48 minutes in goal and made 33 saves for Fredonia (4-20-1, 4-13-1). Jake Williams came on in relief and made seven saves.

STREAKING
  • Hobart won its collegiate hockey record 65th consecutive home game.
  • The Statesmen also extended their overall winning streak to 31 games, matching the longest streak in program history.
  • The Statesmen are unbeaten in their last 38 games.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hobart finished the game with a 47-19 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen were 2-for-6 on the power-play and the Blue Devils were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Hobart opened the scoring at the 10:35 mark of the first period. Sophomore Wilhelm Forsberg fired a shot from the point into the upper right corner of the cage. Forsberg's first collegiate goal was assisted by Lally and Gotinsky.
  • The Statesmen took a 2-0 lead at the 8:31 mark of the second period. Following a brilliant series of passes from Lally and Duclair, Schimizzi blasted a one-timer past Barbeau for his sixth goal of the season.
 
  • Gotinsky extended Hobart's lead to three goals, three minutes later. He snapped a shot from the right faceoff circle off the crossbar and into the net for his second goal of the season. The tally was assisted by Senior Tristan Fasig and sophomore Ryan Remick.
  • Schimizzi completed his first collegiate hat trick with back-to-back power-play goals to open the third period. Seventy-six seconds into the frame, he redirected a centering pass from Connor Elliott past Barbeau for his seventh goal of the season.
  • Just under three minutes later, Schimizzi blasted a one-timer from the top of the left faceoff circle past Barbeau. His eighth goal of the season was assisted by Lally and Bauer Morrissey.
  • Duclair pocketed his 11th goal of the season at the 8:22 mark of the third period. He collected a clearing pass from Schimizzi, deked out the goalie and slipped the puck across the goal line.
  • First-year Laurent Trepanier rounded out the scoring two minutes later. He snapped a shot from the low slot past Williams for his second goal of the season. Senior Ignat Belov and sophomore Hekki Virtanen had assists on the tally.

 
CLIMBING THE LADDER
  • With tonight's shutout, Beaver now has five this season, tying him for fifth on Hobart's single-season list.
  • It was Beaver's 24th career shutout. He is second on the NCAA Division III career shutouts list.
  • Beaver now has 69 career wins, seventh all-time in Division III.
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament. The Statesmen will host a quarterfinal on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at The Cooler. Time and opponent were not known at the time of publication.
