Balanced attack sends #9 William Smith past Skidmore 18-6

GENEVA, N.Y.—Eleven different players scored a goal as the ninth-ranked William Smith lacrosse team knocked off Skidmore 18-6 in its Liberty League opener in The Poole Family Dome this afternoon.
 
Sophomore Lauren Collins and junior Grace Rund led the Herons' offense, recording three goals each. First-year Cat Colvin had a game-high four points on two goals and two assists. Rund added a game-high 10 draw controls. Collins added three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior Janey Sypeck added four caused turnovers and had four ground balls. Graduate student Casey Fiore played just under 52 minutes in goal and made five saves as she earned the victory. Sophomore Samantha Edwards played the final eight minutes and made one save.
 
Olivia Emerson led the offense for the Thoroughbreds, scoring twice. Lily Hudner (1g, 1a) and Charlotte Taylor (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games for Skidmore. Three different players had two draw controls for the Thoroughbreds, including Brooke Lavallee, who also had a team-high two caused turnovers. Tatum Walsh played all 60 minutes in goal and made 15 saves.

  • William Smith dominated the stat sheet. The Herons finished with a 43-15 advantage in shots on goal.

SCORING SUMMARY
  • William Smith jumped out to a 1-0 lead 16 seconds into the game and never looked back. Senior Delaney Cassidy beat a defender and ripped a shot past Walsh for her fifth goal of the season.
  • Just over a minute later, Rund pocketed her ninth goal of the year. She spun around a defender and flipped a shot past the goalie.
  • Collins notched her first goal of the season and of the game at the 9:07 mark of the first quarter. She split a pair of defenders and scored a woman-up goal to make it 3-0. 
  • Skidmore briefly halted the run with 8:32 left in the opening frame when Hunter scored a woman-down goal for her seventh goal of the season.
  • Senior Taryn Luzi scored the next two goals for William Smith. Her 10th goal of the season was assisted by junior Kira Fulton and her 11th of the year was assisted by junior Mia Falco. Both goals were woman-up goals.
  • With the teams finally back to full strength, Skidmore's Hillary Noble scored to make it 5-2. Her third goal of the year was assisted by Charlotte Taylor.
  • Colvin rounded out the first quarter, recording her sixth goal of the season. First-year Amanda Leone had an assist on the tally.
  • Olivia Emerson scored for Skidmore just under five minutes into the second quarter. Her second goal of the year made it 6-3, but that would be as close as the Thoroughbreds would get. Lily Hudner had the assist on the goal.
  • William Smith put the game out of reach with a 12-1 run that lasted 30 minutes and spanned the final three quarters of regulation. First-year Ava Keiser started the run with her first collegiate goal. She dunked home a feed from Charlotte Crocker with eight minutes remaining in the half.
  • Ninety seconds later, Collins picked up her second goal of the game when she split a pair of defenders and ripped a shot past the Skidmore goalie.
  • Taylor briefly halted William Smith's run, converting a free position attempt.
  • Fulton and Rund scored to close out the first half. Fulton's eighth goal of the season was unassisted and Rund's 10th of the year was assisted by Katie Grottenthaler.
  • The Herons scored all five goals in the third quarter. Rund completed her hat trick with a woman-up goal at the 10:21 mark of the third quarter. Colvvin had an assist on the tally.
  • Just under a minute later, first-year Amanda Leone notched her second goal of the season off a feed from fellow first-year Ally Orquiola.
  • With 5:06 left in the third stanza, Orquiola notched her fourth goal of the season, beating Walsh with a shot while falling to the ground.
  • Thirty-six seconds later, Collins completed her hat trick. The woman-up goal was assisted by Colvin.
  • Fulton rounded out the frame with her ninth goal of the season. Her tally was assisted by first-year Kaia Swamp, who recorded her first collegiate point on the goal.
  • Colvin extended the run 45 seconds into the fourth quarter. She collected a pass from Crocker and snuck a shot over the goal line. Two minutes later, first-year Finley Crosby scored her first collegiate goal. Her initial shot was stopped. She picked up the rebound and flipped the shot past Walsh.
  • Swamp scored her first collegiate goal with 8:41 left in regulation, converting on a pass from Iris Polly.
  • Emerson and Ella Koosis rounded out the scoring for Skidmore. Both goals were unassisted.
 
STREAKING
  • Fulton has recorded at least a point in 19 straight games and 22 of her last 23 appearances.
  • Luzi has scored at least a goal in 16 straight games.

William Smith will be back in action on Monday, March 16, when it takes on Salisbury in Panama City Beach, Florida. The opening draw is scheduled for 9 p.m. (8 PM CT).
