ORLANDO, Fla. – The William Smith tennis team opened its spring break trip with two nonconference matches this afternoon. The Herons split action, defeating St. Norbert 5-2 before falling to Bethel 6-1 at Sanlando Courts. With the results, William Smith now sits at 3-1 on the season.
In its first match of the day, William Smith secured the early doubles point as it won two of three doubles matches against the Green Knights. In the No. 1 spot, senior
Haley Levine and junior
Grace Magna defeated Jordan Domnick and Allison Unverzagt 6-3 to move to 3-0 in the No. 1 spot. Junior
Mae Kellersman and sophomore
Bethany Walker added a 6-1 win over Irene Multhauf and Anna Vechart in the No. 2 spot to secure the doubles point.
The Herons continued to impress in singles play, winning four of six singles matches against St. Norbert. In the No. 1 spot, Kellersman secured a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 win over Domnick to move to 2-0 on the season. Levine added a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Unverzagt in the No. 2 spot to secure her third singles win of the season.
In the No. 3 spot, sophomore
Mia Jacobs defeated Vechart 6-4, 6-0 to move to 3-0 in dual match singles play. Senior
Maddy Buck closed out the win with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Multhauf in the No. 4 spot. The win was Buck's first singles win of the season.
In the second match of the day, the Herons fought hard against the Royals but ultimately dropped two of the three doubles matches as Bethel secured the doubles point. William Smith's lone doubles victory came in the No. 2 spot as Kellersman and Walker defeated Claire Keller and Elzeda Walvatne 6-1. It was the duo's third doubles win of the season in the No. 2 spot.
William Smith continued to battle in singles play but won only one singles point against the Royals as Bethel closed out the nonconference battle on top, 6-1. The Herons lone singles win came in the No. 3 spot as Magna defeated Keller 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 to move to 3-0 in dual match singles play this season.
Walker battled Elisabeth Langhus in the No. 4 spot but ultimately dropped the match 6-4, 6-4. Kellersman also put up a fight in the No. 1 spot but lost to Lauryn Douglas 6-2, 6-3.
