MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Sophomore
Aidan Davenport blasted a grand slam over the right center field wall at Griffith Field at the Ripken Experience to lead the Hobart baseball team to an 11-3 victory over Colby-Sawyer this afternoon. For the second game in a row, the Statesmen walloped a season-high 15 hits on the way to a 6-0 record on their spring break trip.
Davenport reached base in all three of his plate appearances and came around to score each time. Senior
Christian Petry and junior
Connor Schmiedlin recorded three hits apiece. Schmiedlin accounted for one of Hobart's three doubles in the game driving in two runs. Juniors
Jack Byrnes and
Cole Conte and first-year
Jack O'Neil each contributed two hits.
On the mound, the Statesmen used seven pitchers to corral the Chargers. Senior
Johnny Hill got the start and earned the win. He worked into and out of a first inning, bases loaded jam. First-year
Joe Dunham pitched two innings and struck out four, half of the pitching staff's total in the game.
PLAYER'S PERSPECTIVE
The scoring began in the second inning when Davenport crossed home on a sacrifice fly by Conte.
The third inning proved pivotal for the Statesmen. Hobart loaded the bases with one out, setting the table for Davenport's big blast. His first collegiate home run extended the lead to 5-0. The Chargers responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, narrowing the gap to 5-3.
In the fifth, Schmiedlin delivered his two-run double and Conte followed with an RBI single, increasing the lead to 8-3. Two innings later, Hobart posted three more runs. A Schmiedlin single was followed by first-year
Quinn Dashefsky's RBI triple. He then scored on an error by Colby-Sawyer (3-7). Conte doubled and scored on Brynes' single to center.
Hobart's pitching staff kept the Chargers in check over the final six innings.
Up next, the Statesmen (12-5) will host St. Lawrence in a three-game Liberty League series. Due to the forecast and field conditions at McDonough Park, Game 1 is expected to be moved to Auburn's Falcon Park on Friday, March 20. Details will be announced later in the week.
