Statesmen tripped up by Leopards 3-0

BOSTON, Mass. –The Hobart volleyball team opened up the weekend with a 3-0 loss to No. 15 Wentworth this evening. With the loss, the Statesmen fall to 10-11 on the season, while the Leopards improve to 14-7 overall.
 
The nonconference battle saw Hobart combine for 26 kills (.136) as a team compared to Wentworth's 25 (.463). The Leopards held a 12-4 edge in service aces and a 7-3 advantage in blocks against the Statesmen. Hobart dished out 24 assists, while Wentworth tallied 22 but the Leopards held a 21-10 advantage in digs in the win.
 
First-year Nicholas Humphries led Hobart with 10 kills, hitting .292 in the loss. Humphries added two digs, one assist and one service ace through three sets. Junior Nate Magni added seven kills (.111), two digs and two blocks, while first-year Ben Welsh chipped in three kills (1.000) and two blocks out of the middle. Defensively, Humphries, Magni and first-year Maxwell Stotsky led the Statesmen with two digs each.
 
Wentworth was led by Cody Popp's six kills (1.000), five digs, one block, one service ace and one assist. Luke McQuaid (.000), Matthew Zegowitz (1.000) and Conner Foxwell (1.000) added three kills each and combined for six digs, five blocks and one service ace in the win. Temer Argynbay tallied a team-high 14 assists in the sweep.

MATCH MOMENTS:
  • Wentworth opened the nonconference battle with a dominant performance in the first set as the Leopards combined for six kills (.444) while holding Hobart to a match-low five kills (.000). Wentworth put on the pressure from the service line, grabbing a 25-10 win in set one.
  • Hobart responded well in the second set, putting down 11 kills (.250) while holding Wentworth to nine kills (.438). The Leopards went on a big scoring run in the middle of the set, grabbing the momentum of set two as the Statesmen began to struggle to find an answer. Hobart tallied two service errors at the end of the set, handing Wentworth a 25-20 win.
  • The Leopards closed out the sweep with a 10 kill (.500) performance in the third set with only two errors. The Statesmen also tallied 10 kills (.115) but racked up seven hitting errors, handing Wentworth a 25-18 win in set three.
MATCH STATS:
  • Humphries led Hobart with 10 kills (.292), while Magni chipped in seven (.111) in the loss. Welsh added three kills (1.000), while Stotsky (-.111) and junior Grayson Getz (.500) added two kills each through three sets.
  • First-year Charlie Dugan led the Statesmen from the setter position, tallying a match-high 22 assists. He added two blocks, one dig and one service ace in the loss.
  • Hobart combined for 10 digs as a team and were led by Humphries, Stotsky and Magni with two each. Dugan, Getz, and sophomores Kian Kischke and Lawson Drabik added one dig each in the setback.
  • The Statesmen served up four aces in the loss and were led by Humphries, Dugan, Getz and Drabik with one service ace each.
  • The Purple and Orange combined for three blocks as a team. Magni, Dugan and Welsh led the way with two blocks each.

Hobart will be back in action Saturday, March 21, when it takes on Wheaton and No. 12 Lasell in a nonconference doubleheader. Action between the Statesmen and the Lyons is set for 11 a.m. and will be followed by a matchup with the Lasers at 1 p.m.
