#8 William Smith blanks Clarkson 16-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The eighth-ranked William Smith lacrosse team used a total team effort as it knocked off Clarkson 16-0 in a Liberty League contest at Hantz Field this evening. It was William Smith's first shutout since April 20, 2019 when it shutout Rochester.
 
Eleven different players scored a goal in the victory. Junior Mia Falco led the way for the offense, recording six points on three goals and three assists. She also had a caused turnover and a ground ball. Senior Taryn Luzi, junior Grace Rund and first-year Ava Keiser also had multi-goal games. First-year Kaia Swamp had three assists. Rund had a game-high six draw controls. Sophomore Maeve Barrins and first-year Charlotte Crocker had two caused turnovers and two ground balls to lead William Smith. Graduate student Casey Fiore stopped all seven shots she faced as she earned the shutout.
 
Mea Tranquilli led the Golden Knights with two draw controls, four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Casin Makenna had two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Riley Donovan started in goal and made three saves. Jennaca McGill played the second half and made five saves.

  • With the win, William Smith is now 6-1 this season and is 2-0 in Liberty League play.
  • Clarkson falls to 6-2 with a 1-1 mark in conference play.

  • The Herons finished the game with a 24-12 advantage in shots, including a 19-7 advantage in shots on goal.
  • William Smith won the battle in the draw circle 14-4 and had a 19-18 edge in ground balls.
  • William Smith was 19-for-21 clearing the ball, and Clarkson was 16-for-21 on its clear attempts.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • The Herons jumped out to a 1-0 lead 33 seconds into the game. Luzi dodged around a defender and flipped a shot past the Clarkson goalie. It was Luzi's 12th goal of the year.
  • After some back-and-forth play in the midfield, the Herons doubled their lead on a goal from junior Katie Grottenthaler. Her 10th goal of the season was assisted by Falco.
  • Less than a minute later, Rund pocketed her 12th goal of the season, ripping a shot past Donovan.
  • William Smith broke the game open, scoring three goals in 62 seconds to take a 6-0 lead after 15 minutes. Falco's sixth goal of the season came a woman-up and was assisted by first-year Kaia Swamp. Keiser's second goal of the year was assisted by first-year Cat Colvin and Colvin had an unassisted goal.
  • The Herons added five goals in the second quarter to take an 11-0 lead after 30 minutes. Luzi opened the frame with her 13th goal of the season. Standing in front of the cage, she buried a feed from Falco.
  • Rund gave William Smith an 8-0 lead with 6:34 left in the half. Her 13th goal of the year was an unassisted tally. One minute later, junior Kira Fulton beat a defender and fired home her 12th goal of the season.
  • Falco's second goal of the game made it 10-0 with just under five minutes remaining in the second quarter. Swamp had an assist on the goal. With just over three minutes remaining in the quarter, Keiser picked up her third goal of the season. Swamp was credited with the assist on the goal.
  • First-year Finley Crosby, Falco and first-year Jianna Lazore scored in the third quarter for William Smith. Crosby's second goal of the season was assisted by Falco. Falco's hat-trick goal was unassisted and Lazore's first career goal was set up by Charlotte Crocker.
  • First-years Katie Hutchinson and Amanda Leone rounded out the scoring with goals in the fourth quarter. Hutchinson's first career goal was assisted by Keiser and Leone's third goal of the season was on a free position attempt.
 
STREAKING
  • Fulton extended her point streak to 21 straight games. She also has had at least one point in 24 of her last 25 appearances.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, March 21, when it heads to Canton to take on St. Lawrence. The opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
