Herons soar past Bombers 6-1 for 1st conference win of the season

GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith tennis team secured its first conference win of the season as it defeated Liberty League foe, Ithaca, 6-1, this afternoon at the HWS Tennis Center. With the win, the Herons improve to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while the Bombers fall to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the Liberty League. William Smith's win was the first win over Ithaca since 2021.

William Smith came out strong in doubles play, winning all three matches to secure the early doubles point. Junior Mae Kellersman and sophomore Bethany Walker put on an impressive performance in the No. 2 spot, defeating Madeleine Sutro and Ava Casell-Lapetina 6-1 to move to 5-2 on the season.

Senior Marin Montagne and sophomore Mia Jacobs came from behind to defeat Martina Nicora and Ekaterina Kelly 7-5 in the No. 3 spot. The duo improved to 2-1 on the season with the win. Senior Haley Levine and junior Grace Magna rallied to defeat Sabrina Cheung and Alys Pop 6-3 in the No. 1 spot to secure the doubles point. With the win, Levine and Magna improved to 5-3 in the No. 1 spot this season.

The Herons continued to impress in singles play, winning five of six matches to clinch their first Liberty League win of the season. In the No. 6 spot, first-year Kaitlyn Hardy picked up her fourth win of the season as she defeated Kyra Terman 6-3, 6-1. Jacobs added a strong 6-1, 6-1 win over Kelly in the No. 5 spot to move to 5-3 on the season.

Walker clinched the match in the No. 4 spot as she defeated Casell-Lapetina 7-6, 6-1. With the win, Walker improved to 3-4 on the season. Magna added a win in the No. 3 spot, besting Sutro 6-4, 7-6 to move to 5-2 on the season.

Levine closed out the win with a thrilling 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 win over Cheung in the No. 2 spot. With the win, Levine improved to 4-3 to begin her senior season.

"I am so incredibly proud of this team," said Head Coach Emme Levenson. "We played a fantastic doubles point, setting up our points and executing well. We dominated in singles, playing smart tennis with high energy. We have been working so hard, and it's so special seeing it pay off. We are excited to continue conference play this weekend against Bard!"

William Smith will be back in action Saturday, March 28, when it hosts a conference match against Bard. First serve between the Herons and the Raptors is set for 1 p.m. in Bristol Field House.
