Three members of the William Smith tennis team were recognized by the Liberty League for their play last week. First-year Kaitlyn Hardy was named the conference's rookie of the week, while senior Haley Levine and junior Grace Magna earned a spot on the weekly honor roll. Hardy's rookie of the week award was the first of her collegiate career.
Last week, the Herons went 2-1, securing crucial conference wins over Ithaca (6-1) and Bard (7-0). William Smith closed out the week with a 7-0 non-conference loss to No. 24 NYU. With the results, the Herons improved to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League.
Hardy earned her first collegiate recognition after an impressive week that saw her go 2-1 at No. 6 singles. She opened the week with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ithaca's Kyra Terman. Hardy then posted a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Bard's Jesse Radzik. Her lone loss came to NYU's Sara Gou, 6-1, 6-0. With the results, Hardy is 5-4 in singles play.
Levine secured a spot on the weekly honor roll after going 2-1 at No. 2 singles last week. She defeated Ithaca's Sabrina Cheung 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 on Wednesday before besting Bard's Natalie Lagunes 6-0, 6-0 on Saturday. Levine fell to NYU's Victoria Wang 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday. She is 5-4 in singles play to begin the season.
Magna joined Levine in doubles play, combining for a 2-1 record in the No. 1 doubles spot. The Heron duo grabbed a huge 6-3 win over Ithaca's Cheung and Alys Pop to open the week. Magna and Levine then went on to earn a dominant 6-0 win over Bard's Paige Houghton and Lagunes. They closed out the week with a 6-1 loss to NYU's Visnja Gusavac and Sophia Yang. With the results, Magna and Levine improved to 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles position this season.
William Smith will be back in action Thursday, April 2, when it travels to Rochester (6-7) for a non-conference match. First serve between the Herons and the Yellowjackets is set for 4 p.m. at the Goergen Athletic Center.
