Jumbos contain Statesmen bats

MEDFORD, Mass.—The Hobart baseball team was limited to eight hits and just one run off Tufts pitching in a doubleheader at Sol Gittleman Park. The Statesmen lost 4-0 and 3-1 this afternoon.

In the first game, Hobart's offense struggled, mustering only two hits as Tufts' pitchers combined for seven strikeouts and did not issue a single walk. The Jumbos took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Max Pavlik doubled and was brought home by Caden Abraham's triple to right center. Abraham then scored on a balk. Jesse McCullough reached on an error, and scored on Malcolm Whitfield's double. Tufts led 3-0 after two innings. The Jumbos added another run in the fourth when Abraham doubled again and scored on a Whitfield single.

On the mound, senior Aaron Forgues pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Junior Charlie Forrest provided relief, delivering a strong 2 2/3 scoreless innings. He didn't allow a hit and struck out two. At the plate, sophomore Jack Farnen delivered a leadoff single and sophomore Aidan Davenport singled in the second.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Hobart fell to Tufts again, this time by a score of 3-1, despite a commendable pitching effort, allowing just seven hits. The Statesmen managed six hits and scored their lone run in the third inning. The Jumbos took an early lead with Tate Bannish's solo home run in the second inning, and manufactured a second run later in the inning without the benefit of another hit, giving Tufts a 2-0 edge.

Junior Jack Byrnes sparked the Statesmen in the third with a leadoff double. He scored on Will Jones' two-out single to center field, narrowing the gap to 2-1. However, Tufts (4-0) extended its lead in the fifth inning when Gavin Lind led off with a double, and Jesse McCullough drove him in with a single.

On the mound, senior Cole Tarrant pitched 4 2/3 innings, surrendering three earned runs on three hits, while striking out one and walking one. First-year Joe Dunham provided solid relief for 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits with one strikeout. Junior Jake Schulte pitched the eighth, allowing just one hit.

Up next for the Statesmen (6-5) is a matchup against Immaculata University at 11 a.m. Friday, March 13 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
