#7 Herons soar past Raptors 24-2

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—13 different players scored as the seventh-ranked William Smith lacrosse team cruised to a 24-2 win over Bard in a Liberty League contest on Ferrari Field this afternoon.

First-year Katie Hutchinson paced the Herons with a career-high six points on four goals and two assists. She added two ground balls and one caused turnover in the win. Three other players scored hat tricks for William Smith. First-years Abigail Bradley (3G, 2A), Ava Keiser (3G, 1A), and Amanda Leone (3G) combined for 12 points in the win. Bradley's first goal was the first of her collegiate career. Sophomore Madeline Packard and senior Alexandra Tapia added two goals each in the win. It was Packard's first career goal as a Heron.

William Smith's defense limited the Raptors to just two shots through 60 minutes. Junior Kira Fulton led the Herons with three caused turnovers, while junior Iris Polly, senior Claire Davenport, junior Katey Connolly and first-year Hannah Higgins forced two turnovers on the afternoon. Fulton, Polly, and Connolly led the team with three ground balls each in the win, while Polly and Connolly won seven draw controls each. It was a career-high for both players. Graduate student Casey Fiore and sophomore Samantha Edwards played 30 minutes each in goal for the Herons.

Kayla Francis and Gwendolyn Jamison led Bard with one goal each in the loss. Eva Hersey and Gwyn Downey caused two turnovers each, while Hersey led the Raptors with three ground balls. Lexie Blackburn played all 60 minutes in goal for Bard and made 14 saves in the loss.

  • William Smith dominated the stat sheet, finishing with a 48-2 advantage in shots. The Herons controlled the draw circle, winning 24 of the 28 draws in the game.

SCORING SUMMARY

  • William Smith opened the scoring 45 second into the game as first-year Cat Colvin found a cutting junior Katie Grottenthaler who buried a shot past Bard's goalie.
  • The Herons doubled their lead less than a minute later as junior Mia Falco found first-year Ally Orquiola cutting across net. Orquiola slotted a shot past the goalie to give William Smith a 2-0 lead. Falco added one a minute later as she dodged around her defender and fired a low shot past the goalie.
  • William Smith went on to add a 5-0 scoring run to close out the opening quarter on top 8-0. In that scoring run, Keiser tallied her first of the day off a pass from classmate Charlotte Crocker, which was followed by Packard's first career goal as a Heron. Hutchinson and first-year Finley Crosby added back-to-back goals before sophomore Lauren Collins chipped in a woman-up goal to close out the first quarter.
  • The Herons opened the scoring at the 9:41 mark of the second quarter as junior Kelly Malone buried a free position shot to secure her first collegiate goal.
  • Roughly 1:30 later, Tapia would score her first of the game to make it 10-0. Leone added back-to-back goals for the Herons before Bard got on the scoreboard thanks to a goal from Francis with 49 seconds remaining in the half.
  • William Smith came out strong to open the second half, going on a 6-0 scoring run to extend its lead to 18-1. Leone opened the scoring run with her third of the day, while Tapia added her second. At the 10:50 mark, Polly scored her first goal as a Heron, which was followed by Bradley's first collegiate goal. Keiser and Packard closed out the third quarter with both of their second goals of the game.
  • Hutchinson played a role in the next three goals for William Smith, scoring two and assisting one to make it a 21-1 score. Davenport and Polly were credited with the assists, while Hutchinson's assist came on a Bradley tally.
  • The Herons concluded their scoring with goals from Keiser, Hutchinson and Bradley over a four-minute span. Bard scored the final goal of the game with one minute left in regulation as Jamison beat Edwards to make it 24-2.

 
STREAKING

  • With a goal today, Fulton extended her points streak to 27 games. She has had at least one point in 28 of her last 29 games.

William Smith will be back in action tomorrow as it travels to Middletown, Connecticut, to take on No. 2 Wesleyan. The crucial non-conference contest between the Herons and the Cardinals is set for 2 p.m.
