Herons fall to Garnet Chargers 5-2

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The William Smith tennis team dropped a Liberty League matchup at Union 5-2 this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons fall to 6-7 on the season with a 3-2 mark in conference play, while the Garnet Chargers improve to 4-9 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League.

Union defeated William Smith in two of the three doubles matches to secure the early doubles point. The Herons lone win came in the No. 3 spot as seniors Marin Montagne and Maddy Buck defeated Jenny Park and Sydney Alphabet 7-6 (7-3). With the win, the duo improved to 4-2 on the season.

The Herons fought back in singles play but could only secure two wins as the Garnet Chargers closed out the conference battle on top, 5-2. Senior Haley Levine secured a win in the No. 1 spot as she defeated Skylar Semon 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). She is now 7-5 on the season.

William Smith also secured a win in the No. 2 spot as junior Mae Kellersman defeated Chara Meidani 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) to secure the Herons second point. With the win, Kellersman improved to 5-8 on the season.

Junior Grace Magna battled in the No. 3 spot but ultimately fell to Claire Langille 6-3, 3-6, 0-1 (6-10). She is now 7-5 in dual match singles play this season.

William Smith will be back in action tomorrow when it continues Liberty League play at St. Lawrence. First serve between the Herons and the Saints is set for 2 p.m.
