Herons fall to Saints 7-0

CANTON, N.Y. – The William Smith tennis team dropped a conference matchup to St. Lawrence 7-0 this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons fall to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while the Saints improve to 11-4 on the season with a 4-2 record in the Liberty League.

St. Lawrence came out strong in doubles play, winning all three matches against William Smith to secure the doubles point. Junior Mae Kellersman and sophomore Bethany Walker put up a fight in the No. 2 spot but fell in a thriller to Elisa Iuri and Ariane Karera 7-6 (7-2). With the loss, Kellersman and Walker fall to 7-6 on the season.

The Saint continued to roll in singles play, winning all six matches against the Herons to clinch the conference victory. First-year Katie Hardy put up a fight in the No. 6 spot but ultimately fell to Ellie Fritz 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 0-1 (9-11). Hardy is now 6-7 on the season.

Sophomore Mia Jacobs took on Ariane Karera in the No. 5 spot but ultimately fell 6-0, 6-3. With the result, Jacobs is now 6-7 on the season. Classmate Bethany Walker took on Yvette Karera in the No. 4 spot but fell 6-1, 6-2 to fall to 5-8 in dual match play this season.

"A hard-fought weekend for the Herons," said Head Coach Emme Levenson. "We played hard and learned a lot. The team continues to get better every day. We look forward to getting back on the courts for Nazareth this Thursday."

William Smith will be back in action Thursday, April 16, when it welcomes Nazareth to Geneva for a non-conference matchup. First serve between the Herons and the Golden Flyers is set for 4 p.m. at HWS Tennis Center.
