GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith tennis team opened its four-match homestand with a dominant 7-0 non-conference win over Nazareth this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improved to 7-8 on the season, while the Golden Flyers fall to 8-7 overall.
The non-conference sweep began in doubles play as William Smith defeated Nazareth in all three matches to secure the early doubles point. In the No. 3 spot, seniors Marin Montagne and Maddy Buck put on an impressive performance, defeating Isabella Iannitti and Paige Masrouri 6-0. With the win, Montagne and Buck improve to 5-3 on the season.
In the No. 1 spot, senior Haley Levine and junior Grace Magna downed Kenna Ellis and Catherine Zak 6-3 to move to 7-8 on the season. The point was clinched in the No. 2 spot as junior Mae Kellersman and sophomore Bethany Walker defeated Victoria Cioni and Anna Spencer 6-0. With the win, the Heron duo improves to a team-leading 8-6 record this season.
The Herons continued to roll in singles play, winning all six matches against the Golden Flyers to secure the win. First-year Katie Hardy put on an impressive performance in the No. 6 position as she defeated Iannitti 6-1, 6-0 to move to 7-7 on the season. Sophomore Mia Jacobs added a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over Masrouri in the No. 5 spot, improving to 7-7 on the season as well.
Walker added her second win of the day as she defeated Cioni 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 position. It was her sixth win of the season. Kellersman also secured her sixth win of the season as she downed Ellis 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot.
Levine secured another point for William Smith as she defeated Zak in a thrilling third set tie breaker 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4). With the win, Levine improved to 8-6 on the season. Magna officially clinched the win in the No. 3 spot as she defeated Spencer 6-1, 6-2. With the win, Magna improves to 8-6 in dual match play this season.
