GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith tennis team closed out its regular season conference schedule with a 7-0 loss to No. 44 Vassar this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons fall to 7-10 on the season and 3-5 in conference play, while the Brewers improved to 12-5 overall and 7-0 in the Liberty League.
The conference showdown began in doubles play as Vassar defeated William Smith in all three matches despite several strong performances by the Herons. Senior Haley Levine and junior Grace Magna put up a fight in the No. 1 spot, but ultimately fell to Iris Li and Erin McCusker 7-5. With the loss, Levine and Magna fell to 7-10 on the season.
Seniors Marin Montagne and Maddy Buck also battled in the No. 3 spot but fell 6-4 to Sieun Lee and Sara Lippin, handing the Brewers the doubles point. With the loss, Montagne and Buck fell to 5-5 on the season.
Vassar continued to roll in singles play, winning all six matches against William Smith to secure the conference win. Sophomore Bethany Walker put up a fight in the No. 4 spot but fell 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 to Maddie Kirby. With the loss, Walker fell to 6-10 on the season.
First-year Katie Hardy also battled in the No. 6 spot, but Gwendolyn Gray rallied to defeat Hardy 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8). Hardy is now 7-9 in her rookie season. Sophomore Mia Jacobs dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Liya Pomfret in the No. 5 spot, falling to 7-9 on the season.
