ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The William Smith tennis team fell 6-1 to the University of Rochester this afternoon in a non-conference matchup in Goergen Athletic Center. With the loss, the Herons fall to 5-6 overall, while the Yellowjackets improve to 7-7 on the season.
William Smith put up a fight in doubles play but ultimately dropped all three matches, handing Rochester the doubles point. Senior Haley Levine and junior Grace Magna battled from behind in the No. 1 spot, but their comeback fell short as they dropped a 7-5 decision to Sanjana Karnam and Jasmin Toor.
Senior Marin Montagne and sophomore Mia Jacobs also impressed in the No. 3 spot but fell to Lilly Caldwell and Esther Wang, 6-4, as the Yellowjackets clinched the doubles point.
The battle continued in singles play as Rochester defeated William Smith in five of six matches to secure the non-conference win. The Herons' lone win came in the No. 2 spot as Levine rallied to defeat Toor 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). With the win, Levine improved to 6-4 on the season.
First-year Katie Hardy also put up a fight in the No. 6 spot, forcing the match to a thrilling tiebreaker before falling to Neha Dania 6-3, 4-6, 0-1 (12-14). Hardy is now 5-5 to begin her rookie season. Magna battled Lauren Kallas in the No. 3 spot but fell 6-7 (3-7), 1-6, to fall to 6-4 on the season.

William Smith will be back in action Wednesday, April 8, when it travels back to Rochester to take on RIT in a crucial Liberty League matchup. Action between the Herons and the Tigers is set for 4 p.m. at the RIT Tennis Courts.
