Herons tame Tigers 5-2 for crucial conference win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The William Smith tennis team secured a crucial conference win this evening as it defeated RIT 5-2 at the RIT Tennis Courts. With the win, the Herons improve to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the Tigers fall to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the Liberty League.

William Smith came out strong in doubles play, winning two of three matches to secure the crucial doubles point. Junior Mae Kellersman and sophomore Bethany Walker put on a dominant performance in the No. 2 spot, defeating Melanie Saborio and Anika Galkiewicz 6-0 to move to 7-4 on the season.

Senior Haley Levine and junior Grace Magna battled in the No. 1 spot but ultimately fell in a thrilling match 7-5 to Kira Kronenberg and Emily Greb. Seniors Marin Montagne and Maddy Buck clinched the doubles point in the No. 3 spot as the duo defeated Amulya Settyvari and Shayna Aggarwal 6-1. Montagne and Buck improved to 3-2 on the season with the win.

The Herons continued on their momentum into singles play, winning four of six matches to secure the crucial conference victory. Magna set the tone early for William Smith as she defeated Saborio 6-0, 6-1 to secure the point. With the win, Magna improved to 7-4 on the season.

First-year Katie Hardy added a 6-2, 6-0 win over Settyvari in the No. 6 spot. With the win, Hardy moves to 6-5 to begin her rookie season. Walker secured her fifth win of the season as she defeated Galkiewicz 6-2, 5-7 1-0 (10-6) in the No. 4 spot.

Sophomore Mia Jacobs clinched the crucial conference victory for the Herons as she defeated Aggarwal 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot. With the win, Jacobs is now 6-5 on the season.

"I'm so proud of this team," said Head Coach Emme Levenson. "We played together, and we won together today! We stepped on the court ready to compete. We played a great doubles point followed by simple, smart singles. This win was a testament to our hard work and incredible team culture!"

William Smith will be back in action Saturday, April 11, when it continues its conference road trip at Union. Action between the Herons and the Garnet Chargers is set for 2 p.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.
