Statesmen down Cardinals 2-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The Hobart soccer team scored a goal in each half as it defeated St. John Fisher 2-0 in a non-conference contest at Growney Stadium this afternoon.
 
Sophomore Gabe Smith and junior Brady Leitner scored the goals for the Statesmen. Junior Jake Hans played all 90 minutes in goal as he earned the shutout.
 
Parker Stusek played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cardinals and made seven saves.
 
KEY STATS
  • Hobart finished the game with an 18-6 advantage in shots.
  • The Statesmen also held an 11-4 edge in corner kicks.
 
FIRST HALF
  • Hobart outshot St. John Fisher 9-2 in the first half.
  • Leitner had the game's first chance just over a minute into the contest, but his shot was smothered by Stusek.
  • In the 17th minute, Hans turned aside a shot from Collin Gannon off a free-kick attempt.
  • With just over 10 minutes left in the frame, Liam Furmansky fired a shot from 25 yards out off the crossbar.
  • One minute later, Smith broke the deadlock. He collected a loose ball down the left wing, dribbled around a defender and fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that deflected off a defender and into the net.
  • Griffin Coutts had a chance to make it 2-0 in the 39th minute, but his shot was smothered by Stusek.
 
SECOND HALF
  • The Statesmen controlled the early stages of the second half, but Stusek smothered a shot from Leitner in the 60th minute to keep it a one-goal game.
  • The Cardinals had a couple of chances in the middle stages of the second half, but were unable to find the equalizer.
  • Hobart put the game away in the 88th minute when Leitner notched his first goal of the season, one-timing a crossing pass from Coutts into the back of the net. Junior Will Slayton also had an assist on the goal.
 
COACH'S CORNER
"We were obviously very pleased to get a good win on the road," The Thomas B. Poole '61 and Family Head Coach of Hobart Soccer Shawn Griffin said. "St. John Fisher played a low block defensive system, which made it difficult to break down. In the end, we found a way to score two goals and not give up any. I'm excited about this weekend's games at Brandeis and Roger Williams."
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 4, when it heads to Waltham, Massachusetts, to take on 18th-ranked Brandeis. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
