WALTHAM, Mass.—The Hobart soccer team scored three times in the second half as it rallied to defeat 18th-ranked Brandeis 3-2 in a non-conference contest at Gordon Field this afternoon. Junior
Griffin Coutts led the Statesmen with four points, recording a goal and two assists.
Coutts scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute for the Statesmen. Sophomore
Tommy Broderick and sophomore
Gabe Smith also scored for the Statesmen. Junior
Jake Hans started in goal for Hobart (2-0-0). He made a career-high six saves.
Joaquin Sanchez-Korenfeld and Keller Chamovitz had the goals for the Judges (1-1-0). Gianni Nrecaj played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves.
KEY STATS
- Brandeis finished the match with a 15-12 edge in shots, but Hobart had a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Statesmen had 11 corner kicks, and the Judges had six.
FIRST HALF
- Charmovitz had the game's first scoring chance in the 27th minute, but his shot was turned aside by Hans.
- In the 38th minute, Danny Spataro had a chance to break the deadlock, but was denied by Nrecaj.
- Brandeis opened the scoring a minute later. Sanchez-Korenfeld stole the ball from a defender and chipped a shot over a charging Hans that found the back of the net.
- Brandeis had an 8-2 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes.
SECOND HALF
- Hobart tied the game just over a minute into the second half. Broderick headed home a corner kick from Coutts. It was Broderick's first goal of the year.
- Brandeis regained the lead in the 52nd minute when Chamovitz tapped home a pass from Yoav Feingold.
- Hobart answered in the 64th minute when Gabe Smith pocketed his second goal of the year. Standing on the back post, he volleyed a corner kick from Coutts past Nrecaj.
- Coutts' game-winner came on a free-kick with less than nine minutes remaining. Standing near the corner flag, he bent a shot into the upper left corner of the goal. It was his first goal of the year.
- Junior Brady Leitner nearly made it a two-goal game, but his shot was swiped off the line at the last second by a Brandeis defender. Nrecaj stopped the rebound.
