GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith soccer team scored a goal in each half and held on to beat 21st-ranked Carnegie Mellon 2-1 in a non-conference contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improve to 3-1-0, and the Tartans fall to 2-1-1.

Charlotte Brown scored the goals for William Smith. Senior
Antonia Goerke played all 90 minutes in goal and made a career-high nine saves as she earned the victory.
Alma Zhong scored the goal for Carnegie Mellon. Maddie Kellog played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Carnegie Mellon finished the game with a 20-10 advantage in shots.
- The Tartans also had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
FIRST HALF
- Senior Izzy Thors had the game's first scoring chance in the second minute, but her shot was smothered by Kellog.
- In the 11th minute, junior Grace Metzler had a shot that just missed over the crossbar.
- The Herons broke through in the 28th minute. Sudbay intercepted a clearing pass and fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The ball deflected off a Tartan defender, off the left goal post and into the back of the net. It was Sudbay's first collegiate goal.
- Carnegie Mellon had a pair of chances to end the half, but Goerke was up to the task, stopping both shots.
SECOND HALF
- William Smith extended the lead to two goals in the 51st minute. Brown, standing near the penalty spot, one-timed a crossing pass from Metzler off the crossbar and across the goal line. It was her second goal in as many games.
- Following the Brown goal, Carnegie Mellon cranked up the pressure again. In the 53rd minute, Lauren Ricapito had a chance smothered by Goerke. Three minutes later, the Heron goalie stopped a shot from Zhong.
- Zhong then broke up the shutout bid in the 62nd minute. She looped a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box over Goerke and into the upper left corner of the goal.
- The Tartans jumped on the momentum and had the game's final nine shots, but could not find the equalizer.
- The Herons' defense had a series of blocked shots in the 71st minute.
- A late substitution, Audrey Bianco had a dangerous opportunity in the closing seconds that was stopped by a diving Goerke.

"I thought we came out really strong and that we moved the ball well and with purpose, especially in the beginning of the first half, and that was great to see. We were locked in defensively and executed our game plan really well. Carnegie Mellon made some good changes and grew into the game. At times, we just had to survive, but our players dug deep. Getting that second goal on a lightning counterattack was awesome. I think the last 12 minutes or so we just gutted it out and the players came up with some big moments and that was awesome to see." William Smith will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 16, when it begins a six-game road trip at Geneseo. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
