Two members of the William Smith field hockey team were recognized by the Liberty League for their play last week. Junior Eliza Freeland was named the conference's offensive performer of the week, while junior Caroline Kogut was selected the defensive performer of the week.

The Herons went 2-1 last week, defeating SUNY Geneseo 2-1 in overtime and Lebanon Valley 4-0 in the William Smith Classic after falling to Ohio Wesleyan 3-2 in overtime. With the results, the Herons improve to 3-2 on the season.

Freeland earned her first career conference recognition after a dominant week that saw her earn six points on three goals. In Wednesday's non-conference matchup with the Knights, Freeland opened the scoring for William Smith, giving the Herons an early 1-0 lead. In Sunday's 4-0 win over the Flying Dutchmen, she scored twice, including the game-winning tally to get William Smith back in the win column

The forward from Buffalo, New York, has recorded eight points this season on four goals. Freeland ranks third in the Liberty League in goals per game (0.80) and seventh in points per game (1.60).

Kogut was recognized as the Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week after a standout week both offensively and defensively. On Wednesday, Kogut scored the game-winner in overtime. She also recorded a defensive save in overtime to keep William Smith in the game. Kogut followed that up with an assist against the Battling Bishops, setting up the goal that sent the game to overtime. She closed out the week with a goal in the win over Lebanon Valley.

The defender from Glenville, New York, has six points this season on two goals and two assists. Kogut leads the Liberty League in defensive saves per game (0.40) and ranks 10th in assists (0.40).

William Smith will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 16, when it hosts Nazareth for a non-conference contest. Action between the Herons and the Golden Flyers is set for 7 p.m. on McCooey Field.
