Leitner’s brace leads #21 Hobart past Bard 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—Junior forward Brady Leitner scored a pair of goals as the 21st-ranked Hobart soccer team rallied to beat Bard 2-1 in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon.  It was Leitner's second straight multi-goal game.
 
Senior midfielder Quinn Phillips also had a multi-point game, finishing with a pair of assists. Junior Jake Hans played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves to earn the win.
 
Henry Skeltis scored the goal for the Raptors. Jake Sudit played all 90 minutes in the Bard goal and made four saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With the win, Hobart is now 8-1-0 on the season with a 2-1-0 record in Liberty League play.
  • Bard falls to 7-1-0 and 0-1-0 in conference play.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • In a tightly contested match, the Statesmen finished with a 12-9 edge in shots.
  • Hobart had six corner kicks in the game, and Bard had four.
 
FIRST HALF
  • Hobart had the game's first scoring chance in the eighth minute, but Leitner's shot was stopped by a diving Sudit. A minute later, Gabe Smith just missed the right goalpost.
  • In the 17th minute, Bard capitalized on a free kick. Standing on the back post, Skeltis one-timed a crossing pass from Emmett Olson past Hans for his fourth goal of the season.
  • The Statesmen answered in the 23rd minute. Leitner ran onto a long looping pass from Phillips, settled the bouncing ball and chipped a shot past the Raptor's goalie.
  • First-year Owen Lucano tested Sudit in the 34th minute, but the goalkeeper moved to his left and stopped the shot.
 
SECOND HALF
  • Play in the early part of the second half settled into the midfield.
  • Junior Danny Spataro nearly gave Hobart a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute, but his shot was stopped by a diving Sudit.
  • Three minutes later, Hans made a terrific save on a shot from Mateo Betelu.
  • Leitner gave Hobart a 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute. He headed home a perfectly placed corner kick from Phillips. It was Leitner's sixth goal of the season.
  • Bard had its chances down the stretch but could not find the equalizer. The Raptors had two corner kicks in the final three minutes, but Hobart's defense was up to the task and kept the ball out of the back of the net.

Poole '61 and Family Head Coach of Hobart Soccer Shawn Griffin said.  "I'm so happy with how hard our guys worked to pick up three important points in the league standings. Brady Leitner showed his ability level today with two important goals. I'm excited to have an open week in preparation for next weekend's game with Clarkson."
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action next weekend, Oct. 3-4, when it welcomes Clarkson and Cortland for a pair of games. Both games are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and are part of the 2026 HWS Homecoming and Family Weekend celebrations.
