LEXINGTON, Va.—The William Smith soccer team was edged by seventh-ranked Washington and Lee 3-1 in a non-conference contest at Watt Field. With the loss, the Herons fall to 2-1-0 on the season, and the Generals improve to 2-0-0.
The game kicked off on Friday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. With 20:37 remaining in the first half, the teams were sent to their respective locker rooms for a lightning delay. After a two-hour delay due to the severe weather, the teams agreed to suspend the contest. The game resumed this morning at 9:30 a.m.

Kristin Middaugh scored for William Smith. Senior
Antonia Goerke played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves.
Megan Zimmerman had two goals to lead the way for the Generals. Kate McEnroe started in goal and stopped three shots.
FRIDAY'S ACTION
- William Smith had the game's first chance 10 seconds into the contest. Grace Metzler raced into the box and fired a shot on cage that was turned aside by McEnroe. Fifty seconds later, Middaugh fired a shot just over the crossbar.
- Zimmerman opened the scoring in the fourth minute. She headed a crossing pass from Avery Hannah past Goerke. It was her third goal of the year.
- The Generals kept the pressure on following the goal Emily Burke and Zimmerman had shots turned aside by Goerke.
- In the 19th minute, Zimmerman notched her fourth goal of the year. Off a corner kick, she swiped a bouncing ball across the goal line. The tally was set up by her sister Elizabeth Zimmerman.
SUNDAY'S RESUMPTION
- Washington and Lee had three shots in the final 20 minutes of the first half. Goerke was up to the task, making three saves.
- The Herons ended the shutout bid in the 60th minute. Middaugh dribbled around a defender and ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the lower right corner of the cage.
- In the 66th minute, Lily Pryzwansky had a chance to tie the game, but her shot was smothered by McEnroe.
- The Generals added an insurance goal in the 76th minute. Sydney Valentine redirected a cross from Cara Duggan into the back of the net.
MATCH STATS
- Washington and Lee had a 21-11 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Generals had five corner kicks in the game, and the Herons had three.
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 13, when it welcomes Carnegie Mellon to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and is William Smith Soccer's Alumnae Weekend.
