Winn-Seeley Award

Winn-Seeley Award

Marcia Winn first came to William Smith in 1930 as assistant professor of physical education. In 1934 she was promoted to full professor and athletics director, a post she held until her retirement in 1967. Together with Janet Seeley, Winn developed physical education and dance programs and introduced "Sports Day" with nearby colleges. She was a strong and persuasive advocate for the legitimacy of sports for women at a time when women's intercollegiate athletics was widely regarded with skepticism and disdain. Marcia helped found the Central New York Varsity Sports Organization, a precursor of the NYSWCAA. In 1970 she was awarded Doctor of Humane Letters by the Colleges.

Janet Seeley was a faculty member of the Colleges from 1932 through 1971. Seeley's extensive study began at the Bennington School of Dance, the Elizabeth Duncan School of Dance and the Martha Graham School. It enabled her to lay the foundation for the development of dance as an integral part of the Colleges' curriculum. She worked in concert with her close friend, Marcia Winn, to develop and promote women's intercollegiate athletics at the Colleges, regionally and at the national level.

The Winn-Seeley Award is presented to an outstanding senior athlete for her William Smith College achievements in service, leadership, athletics, and academics.
