The Joan Hinton Hurd ’65 Lifetime Athletic Achievement Award recognizes William Smith graduates for outstanding lifetime athletic achievement. Established in October 2002, this award honors Joan Hinton Hurd ’65, who has exemplified athletic distinction as an undergraduate and throughout her lifetime. A champion golf, tennis, and platform tennis player, Hinton Hurd continues to compete at the highest level. Along with her active participation, she has supported youth and collegiate sports programs for more than 35 years serving on club, state, and regional women’s golf and racket sport boards and committees. While inspiring many women to participate, she encouraged her children to compete at the highest level. They, too, have followed her lead in their continuing involvement in competitive sports.
The selection committee chooses the recipients from nominations submitted by the Heron Society membership, the William Smith coaching staff, the Athletic Communications Office and Alumnae Relations Office.
