Fiume Britton to receive Hinton Hurd Award

The William Smith College Heron Society Board of Directors has selected Tracey Fiume Britton '90, of Rochester, N.Y., to receive the Joan Hinton Hurd '65 Lifetime Athletic Achievement Award. The presentation will be made during the 2010 Heron Hall of Honor celebration, March 27 in the Vandervort Room of the Scandling Campus Center.

Tracey Fiume BrittonA native of Hicksville, N.Y., Fiume Britton was a four-year starter in the midfield for the William Smith soccer team, helping the 1988 squad to the school's first NCAA Division III National Championship in a team sport. In 2007, the 1988 team was honored as the first William Smith Team of Distinction, the highest honor the college bestows on a team.

Fiume Britton graduated cum laude from William Smith with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She taught in an elementary school while pursing her master's degree in school psychology from RIT. She also continued her soccer career as a member of the WISL's Rochester Ravens.

Fiume Britton began her coaching career in 1993 when she joined the women's soccer staff of Monroe Community College as an assistant. Over the next six seasons, she helped the Tribunes capture four regional titles and the 1995 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship.

Prior to the 1999 season, Fiume Britton took over the program as head coach. Over the next nine seasons, she guided the Tribunes to a record of 171-12-9 (.914). Her squads won NJCAA National Championships in 2001, 2004, and 2005. Additionally, MCC was the national runner-up in 1999, 2000, and 2002. Fiume Britton mentored more than 20 All-Americans at MCC, including two-time national player of the year Melissa Hornfeck, and was named the National Coach of the Year three times.

In 2005, Fiume Britton was the inaugural recipient of the Murph Shapiro Excellence in Coaching Award, presented to the MCC coach whose team has excelled on the field, in the classroom, and demonstrates commitment to community. In 2009, she was inducted into the MCC Hall of Fame and received the NSCAA's Charlie Lee NISOA Merit Award for significant contributions to NJCAA women's soccer.

Fiume Britton retired from collegiate coaching two years ago and is currently an academic counselor at MCC's Damon City Campus. Still active in the athletic community, she coaches her sons in the Pittsford Mustangs Soccer Club, trains various girls' teams throughout the year, and teaches at soccer clinics. Britton is also a member of the Walk of Fame Committee for Frontier Field.

The award recognizes the exemplary athletic distinction that Joan Hinton Hurd held as an undergraduate at William Smith and has continued to uphold throughout her lifetime. A club and regional champion in platform tennis and golf, Hurd still competes at the highest level. Along with her active participation, she has supported youth and collegiate sports programs for more than 40 years. While encouraging many women to participate, she also inspired her children to compete at the highest level.

As a William Smith student, Hurd was active in the International Relations Club, drama, and the Athletic Association in tennis, hockey, basketball, badminton and volleyball.

Fiume Britton is the second recipient of the Joan Hinton Hurd '65 Lifetime Athletic Achievement Award, joining Lauren Head '83, who was honored in 2007.

Fiume Britton will be honored in conjunction with the Heron Hall of Honor celebration. The Hall of Honor Class of 2010 includes Leah Cornwell '02, of Gainesville, Fla., Kelly Martin '84, of South Berwick, Maine, Pam DuMond Tarnowski '96, of Charlotte, N.C., Amy Vandervort '89, of Ballston Spa, N.Y., and Kelly VanGorden '02, of Bloomsburg, Pa.
