Steve England was named the Hobart Head Volleyball Coach ahead of the program's inaugural season in 2023-24. He comes to HWS with nearly a decade of head coaching experience.
In his first year at the helm of the Hobart volleyball team, England led the Statesmen to an 18-11 record with a 3-4 mark in the United Volleyball Conference. England and the Statesmen clinched the fifth seed in the conference's postseason tournament and fell in the first round to fourth-seeded MIT. Hobart was ranked in the AVCA national poll for 11 straight weeks and finished its inaugural season ranked No.16. Along the way, the Statesmen defeated four ranked opponents and went to five sets with three more. England produced one AVCA All-American, the AVCA Regional Player of the Year, one AVCA All-Region selection and two UVC All-Conference selections in his first year at Hobart. As a team, the Statesmen ranked 11th in the nation in kills per set (12.44) and fourth in assists per set (11.75).Â
England has a resume filled with winning seasons, building a 164-98 (.626) record over the past decade. He spent the past five years leading St. John Fisher in its inaugural varsity seasons. In 2022, England’s Cardinals went 24-8, won the United Volleyball Conference Championship and earned the program’s first NCAA Championship berth, landing at No. 9 in the final AVCA coaches poll. In total, he guided St. John Fisher to three UVC Tournament appearances and three top-15 end-of-season national rankings.

England has recruited and mentored some of the top players in the game, coaching five Cardinals to All-America honors while several others earned all-region and all-conference accolades.

Prior to his time at Fisher, England led the Elmira Soaring Eagles for four consecutive seasons, including back-to-back-to-back 20-win campaigns. He was voted the 2014 UVC Coach of the Year after leading Elmira to a 24-10 overall record.

A native of Rochester, England earned a bachelor’s degree from Nazareth College in 2006 and earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Washington in 2011. He was a member of the Golden Flyers first two varsity teams, helping Naz go from 10-13 as a first-year program to 20-9 the following season.

Following graduation, England was an assistant head coach for the men’s and women’s volleyball teams at Nazareth. After five years on the coaching staff of his alma mater, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for Washington’s women’s volleyball team.
