Christie goal helps Smithies win

BINGHAMTON—William Smith dominated its women's field hockey opener yesterday outshooting Houghton 34-8 but settling for a 1-1 win on penetration time.

The Smithies outplayed Houghton with a penetration time of 11:23, compared to Houghton's 5:17 to get the win.

Stephanie Christie scored the only Smithie goal 10:10 into the second half off a quick change of field from to the right to the left side. She took a strong drive at the top of the striking circle, shot low and hit the left corner of the cage to put the Smithies up 1-0.

Houghton came up with its goal with less than four minutes to play with a high shot off the center of the striking circle by Vanese Evans.

Despite only one goal, William Smith coaches Pat Genovese and Kathy Vangeli were pleased with the first game. "The team played with a new formation and everyone seemed to adjust well for the first time," said Genovese.

Genovese and Vangeli agreed that the reason the Smithies didn't score more than one goal was that the primary shots on goal were strong but the follow up shots weren't good, hard tries.

The Smithie JV tied Houghton 0-0. Penetration time was not kept, but William Smith outshot Houghton 31-0. Genovese felt that Vicki Boies was the defensive standout for the Smithies and Kristen Denholm and Lisa Jennings sparked the attack.
