Herons play Golden Flyers to 1-1 tie

Box Score William Smith College first-year goalkeeper Amanda Davis (Roxbury/Succasunna, N.J.) made a crucial save on a Nazareth penalty kick in the 109th minute, preserving the 1-1 tie between the Heron soccer team and the Golden Flyers tonight on Cozzens Field. Sixth-ranked William Smith moves to 9-1-3 on the season, while Nazareth now stands at 9-4-1 overall.

After a scoreless first half, Golden Flyer Kelly Finn broke through in the 76th minute, scoring on a scramble in front of the net. Finn headed the ball over Davis' head just as she was about to grab it, to put Nazareth in front 1-0.

The Herons answered at the 81 minute, 38 second mark, to force the eventual overtime. Junior midfielder Megan Stevens (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) hammered the ball into the back of the net from less than one yard out, after sophomore forward Brelynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.) sent the low cross into the box.

In the first overtime period, William Smith first-year forward Kate Redmond (Bernard/Bernardsville, N.J.) had two opportunities to win the game in the 93rd minute. She got loose for a one-on-one shot with Nazareth goalie Hillary Simon, but Simon came out to make the save. Redmond had another chance to score off the rebound from her first shot, but Simon came up with the stop again, this time from the ground.

Nasypany nearly ended the game in the 107th minute, as she took on four Nazareth defenders and managed to free herself for a hard shot that went just wide.

The Golden Flyers' penalty kick came at 108:13. Rachel Cushman took the shot, sending it straight down the middle, and Davis came up big with the kick save. Cushman had another opportunity on the rebound, but again, Davis was there to collect the attempt.

William Smith out shot its visitor 24-12, and held an 8-0 advantage on corner kicks.

Davis finished with eight saves for the Herons, while Simon finished with 11 for Nazareth.

The Herons will be back in action on Oct. 19, when they host Oneonta for a non-league match at noon. The contest will be broadcast live on WHWS-FM (105.7) and will also have live stats available online.
