Box Score The fourth-ranked Hobart College soccer team secured the Liberty League regular season title this afternoon with a 5-1 victory at Vassar, marking the first time in program history the Statesmen have finished first in the conference. Unbeaten Hobart improves to 15-0-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the league, while the Brewers drop to 7-7-0 on the season and 2-5-0 in the Liberty League.
Senior midfielder
Tyler Webster (Acton Boxborough/Acton, Mass.) led the Statesmen with two goals, including his Liberty League-leading fifth game-winner, and an assist, while first-year forward
Tommy Hayes (St. Anthony's/East Northport, N.Y.) recorded three assists, and senior forward
Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) added a goal and a helper.
Both of Webster's goals came in the 16th minute of action, and both were set up by Hayes. Hayes passed the ball off to Webster in front of the goal at the 15 minute, 33 second mark, who then buried it into the net. Twenty-four seconds later, they connected again to give the Statesmen a 2-0 advantage.
Less than four minutes later, Riso tallied on a short cross from Hayes, to put Hobart up 3-0 with over 70 minutes left to play.
Brewers Matthew Belli and Jon Hootnick teamed up to sneak Vassar's lone goal of the day past senior Statesmen goalkeeper
Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) at 46:32, but Hobart countered with its fourth score of the day a few seconds later, at 47:16. This time it was Webster who crossed the ball to first-year midfielder
Evan Grey (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa, N.Y.).
Senior Statesmen midfielder
Philipp Schoeniger (Erlangen/Erlangen, Germany) added one more goal for the visitors in the 52nd minute. Riso recorded the assist.
Van Dellon picked up two saves in his 15th win of the season, while Brewer goalie Jake London also made two stops. Hobart outshot Vassar 27-10.
Webster and Riso now share the team lead with eight goals apiece. Webster has also cracked into the top-10 on Hobart's career goals and points lists. His 23 tallies tie him for ninth on the career goals list, while his 52 points put him in the 10th spot on the career points list.
The Statesmen will travel to Fredonia for their final regular season match on Nov. 1, before hosting the Liberty League Tournament as the No. 1 seed Nov. 7-8.
