Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.--The Hobart basketball team picked up its first win of the young season in dominating fashion, cruising by visiting Cazenovia 102-62. The Statesmen crested the century mark for the first time since scoring 103 against Hamilton on Feb. 11, 2003.
Sophomore
Adam Salzmann paced Hobart with a game-high 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Classmates
Rob Estep and
Mark Bruce added 15 and 10 points, respectively, while first-year
Josh Kalenderian chipped in 10 as well. Sophomore
Michael Barlow led a balanced rebounding effort, collecting a game-high seven caroms, as Hobart posted a 51-34 advantage on the glass. Junior
Sean McHugh posted a game-high seven assists.
The Statesmen (1-2) shot 43.8 percent from the floor, including 12-of-20 three-pointers, and made 78.8 percent from the free throw line.
Stephen Harris was the lone Wildcat to reach double digits, finishing the night with 16 points. Cazenovia shot just 30.5 percent from the floor and connected on only 59.4 percent from the line.
The Wildcats (0-3) had transportation troubles, arriving just before the scheduled 7 p.m. tipoff. After a short delay to allow Cazenovia time to warm up, things went down hill fast for the visitors. Leading 7-4 less than two minutes in, the Wildcats went stone cold. More than four minutes passed between baskets for Caz, while the Statesmen scored 15 unanswered points, including eight from Salzmann.
From there, Hobart never let its lead dip below seven points, inflating it to a high of 27 thanks to Kalenderian's three-point play with 5.5 seconds left in the opening stanza. The Statesmen carried that 57-30 lead into the break.
Harris hit a three to open the second half, but Cazenovia got no closer, yielding 100 points for the second straight game.
Hobart is back in action on Nov. 25, when the Statesmen host Geneseo State. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
