Box Score First-year forward Kate Redmond (Bernard/Bernardsville, N.J.) netted the game-winning goal early in the second overtime period to lead the fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team past ninth-ranked Amherst 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Division III NCAA Tournament this afternoon. The Herons improve to 16-1-5 overall, and earn their sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament semifinals, while the Lord Jeffs end their season with a 14-3-3 mark.

After nearly 103 minutes of scoreless action on a slick Cozzens Field, William Smith caught a break. Sophomore forward BreLynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.) chipped the ball up the right sideline to Redmond, who was in perfect position to take the ball in for a one-on-one breakaway with Amherst first-year goalkeeper Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, Conn.). Redmond touched the ball to her left to avoid Horwitz coming out to challenge, then sent the ball into the back of the net from 2 yards out.

Both teams had opportunities to score throughout the match. The Herons had a few chances in the final 20 minutes of regulation. In the 72nd minute, first-year midfielder Sarah Tarantino (East Aurora/East Aurora, N.Y.) headed the ball on net after a corner kick from senior midfielder Rayza Santiago (Webster Schroeder/Webster, N.Y.), but the Lord Jeffs' defense got there just in time to make the team save.

With less than seven minutes left in regulation, Nasypany broke free from the Amherst defense to send a low cross across the goal mouth intended for junior midfielder Katelyn Tyson (Leland/San Jose, Calif.), who just missed the connection.

Midway through the second half, the Lord Jeffs nearly got a goal, courtesy of the William Smith defense scrambling to kick the ball away from the net, but junior Julie Boardman-Brann (Niskayuna/Niskayuna, N.Y.) was there to clear the ball before it crossed the goal line.

Amherst controlled play in the first overtime period, putting three shots on the board, and did not allow the Herons to take a single shot in the period. Livia Rizzo (Dover, Mass.) booted a long shot in the 92nd minute that hit the crossbar, and Kyla Woodhouse's (Topsham, Maine) attempt on the rebound was smothered by William Smith first-year goalie Amanda Davis (Roxbury, Succasunna, N.J.). Woodhouse had another opportunity at 98:27, which was also stopped by Davis.

Davis finished with seven saves and her ninth shutout of the year, while Horwitz finished with three stops for the Lord Jeffs. Amherst outshot its host 16-8, while William Smith held a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Herons will make their first trip to the NCAA Tournament semifinals since 2002, when they travel to Greensboro, N.C., to take on second-ranked Messiah (22-0-2) on Dec. 5.
