#11 Herons corral Mustangs, 5-1

Landahl net 3 as Herons remain perfect

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 11th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team wrapped up the 2008 William Smith Invitational with a 5-1 win over Stevenson University at McCooey Field this afternoon. Senior Kelsey Landahl (Pioneer/Delevan, N.Y.) led the charge with her first career hat trick.

The Herons (6-0) opened the scoring on a penalty corner just 73 seconds into the match, when Landahl tipped home a drive by junior Janelle Walkley (Tioga/Tioga Center, N.Y.). Walkley set up the second score of the afternoon as well with a perfect cross to senior Jamie Tucciarone (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.), who posted her fifth goal of the season.

Junior Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) gave William Smith a 3-0 lead with a flip shot from the left wing. The penalty corner goal was assisted by senior Katie Mancuso (Harpursville/Port Crane, N.Y.) and Landahl.

The Herons enjoyed a 4-0 lead thanks to Landahl's goal in the 43rd minute. Her second tally of the match finished a scrum in front of the Mustangs' cage. Landhal notched her third score in the 51st minute, batting home a rebound off a shot by junior Sarah Palmer (Friends School/Baltimore, Md.).

Stevenson (4-5) broke up the shutout in the 66th minute. Jennifer Sauers knocked home a rebound after sophomore goalie Chelsea Snyder (Cortland/Cortland, N.Y.) turned back two short shots by the Mustangs. Snyder posted both William Smith saves, while senior Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) earned the win without facing a shot in the first 64 minutes, 25 seconds. Senior defender Charlotte Styer (Governor Mifflin/Mohnton, Pa.) was credited with the match's only defensive save.

Stevenson starting goalie Kara Zimmerman made 13 saves in 54:42, while Victoria Wolfe did not face a shot in relief.

William Smith is back in action at 4 p.m. on Sept. 26, when the Herons visit Liberty League foe Vassar.
