#6 Hobart defeats league rival St. Lawrence, 2-1

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked Hobart College soccer team defeated Liberty League rival St. Lawrence 2-1 this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen continue to hold an undefeated record, as they improve to 9-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the league, while the Saints fall to 6-4-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in the Liberty League.

The first goal of the day was scored after 19 minutes, 9 seconds of action. Junior defender Matt Geswell (Carmel/Patterson, N.Y.) took a throw-in for Hobart on the Saints' end of the field. His long throw went to senior midfielder Philipp Schoeniger (Erlangen/Erlangen, Germany) in the box, who touched the ball to the head of senior forward Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) for the goal. Riso currently leads the league with seven goals.

At the 31:49 mark, senior midfielder Tyler Webster (Acton Boxborough/Acton, Mass.) notched his fourth tally of the year, and third game-winner. First-year midfielder Clancy Purcell (Shelton/Shelton, Conn.) threaded the ball to Webster from midfield, setting him up for a breakaway that resulted in the Statesmen's second goal. The assist marked Purcell's league-leading sixth of the year.

Less than a minute later, St. Lawrence got on the board. The Saints benefited from a Hobart foul as their free kick landed in front of the Statesmen goal. Senior Keil Dwyer (Toll Gate/Warwick, R.I.) got a shot off and scored amid the scramble.

The 2-1 halftime score would become the final after a hard-fought second stanza. Hobart held a 20-14 advantage in total shots, while St. Lawrence had a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Senior Statesmen netminder Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) picked up six saves on the way to his ninth win of the season, while senior Saints' goalkeeper Emilio Coletta (Marianapolis College/Montreal/Quebec) registered three stops.

Hobart will be in action again on Sept. 30, when it travels to Medaille for a non-league match at 7 p.m.
