Saints stave off Herons, 68-50

Box Score CANTON, N.Y.--The William Smith basketball team struggled from the floor in the second half against Liberty League leading St. Lawrence, as the Saints posted a 68-50 victory in Berkman Gymnasium today. The Herons slip to 10-8 overall, 4-3 in the conference, while St. Lawrence improves to 13-4, 6-1.

Latasha Coney paced William Smith with 14 points and three assists. Erin Cunningham chipped in 11 points and six rebounds.

The Saints' Katie Palmer led all scorers with 22 points, while Abby Stanton and Lauren Sischo contributed 17 and 10 points, respectively.

From the opening basket, St. Lawrence led throughout the first half, expanding their advantage to as many as eight. Sischo's three at the 4:52 mark put the home team in front 30-22, but the Herons rallied for the final seven points of the half to head into halftime down just one.

Cunningham and Palmer both had nine points at the break.

William Smith grabbed its only lead of the contest with the first three points of the second half, but a 14-2 run put St. Lawrence in control of the game. The Herons managed to whittle their deficit down to seven, 47-40, with 11 minutes remaining, but got no closer.

The Saints shot 41 percent from the floor, including 44.8 percent in the second half. William Smith connected on just 36.2 percent for the game, including 33.3 percent after halftime.

The Herons will be back in action on Feb. 6, when they visit Vassar. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
