#19 Statesmen hold off Saints 4-3

Box Score CANTON, N.Y.—The 19th-ranked Hobart College soccer team downed St. Lawrence 4-3 in Liberty League action this afternoon on MacAllaster Field. The Statesmen improve to 8-1-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference, while the Saints drop to 7-3-0 on the year and 1-2-0 in the Liberty League.

Hobart junior Kevin McCarthy tallied a goal and two assists, while first-year Will Abbott added two goals to lead the Statesmen.

St. Lawrence struck first, just 4 minutes, 58 seconds into the match, when Brendan Gorman sent a cross to Sam DeMello at the top of the 18-yard box for a shot that got past Hobart sophomore goalie Charlie Hale.

The Statesmen answered with two quick goals later in the half. Sophomore Tommy Hayes headed in his third goal of the year, assisted by sophomore Evan Grey, to even the game at 1-all in the 18th minute. Just over three minutes later, McCarthy lofted a long shot over the head of Saints' goalkeeper Brian Abernathy for the go-ahead goal. Senior Matt Geswell recorded the assist.

Abbott put Hobart up 3-1 early in the second half. His shot to the lower left corner of the goal was set up by McCarthy in the 49th minute. McCarthy found Abbott again at 55:46 to give the Statesmen a comfortable 4-1 lead. Abbott's second tally of the day marked his team-high fourth goal of the season.

The Saints tried to mount a comeback in the final minutes, as DeMello connected on a penalty kick and Sean Scott scored in the 87th and 90th minutes, respectively, but they would come up short.

St. Lawrence held a 27-14 advantage in total shots and a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.

Hale finished with a career-high nine saves, while Abernathy recorded four stops for the hosts.

The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 10, when they travel to Clarkson for another Liberty League match at 2 p.m.
