Ashlinn Barber produced a double-double to lead the William Smith basketball team to a 68-60 victory at Cortland this afternoon. She finished the contest with 14 points, a career-high 16 rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots.
Barber connected on 7-of-11 from the floor, while sophomore
Kristen Kush hit on 7-of-13 and 1-of-3 at the line for a team-high 15 points. Junior
Mollie Danahy chipped in eight points, six assists, and six steals, and sophomore
Carrie Stevens collected a career-high 12 caroms for the Herons (3-3).
Senior Jessica Laing led Cortland (5-3) with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Micki Volpini scored 10 points, pulled down five rebounds and recorded three steals.
William Smith shot 44 percent from the field (28-of-64), while limiting Cortland to just 26 percent (18-of-69). The Herons also enjoyed a 48-44 advantage on the glass.
Cortland led 9-6 early in the contest, but nine unanswered points by William Smith put the visitor's in front for good. The Red Dragons twice closed the gap to just a single point in the waning minutes of the first half, but the Herons would not relinquish their lead. William Smith went on a 7-0 run to quell the second threat and build an eight-point lead, their largest of the half.
The Herons took a 28-21 lead into halftime. Barber had six points and nine rebounds at the break.
Cortland scored the first basket of the second half, but William Smith countered with a 12-2 run to take a 40-25 lead. Barber's layup with nine minutes left gave the Herons their largest lead of the game, 56-38.
The Red Dragons outscored William Smith 15-7 over the final five minutes, but got no closer than seven down, 67-60, with 30 seconds remaining.
The Herons will be back in action on Dec. 29, when they battle McMurry in the first round of the Rudino's Pizza Holiday Classic, in Austin, Texas. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST (4 p.m. EST). Fans can follow the action online with
