Herons fall to Rochester 69-61

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team forced Rochester into 25 turnovers tonight, but couldn't overcome a 53-25 rebounding deficit in a 69-61 loss to the Yellowjackets. With the win, Rochester improved to 5-2, while the Herons slipped to 2-3.

William Smith's Mollie Danahy led all scorers with 18 points, a game-high five assists, and a game-high five steals. Kristen Kush joined her in double figures with 13 points and three steals, while Carrie Stevens added a team-high seven rebounds to go with six points.

Madeline Korber paced the Yellowjackets with 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Melissa Alwardt added 13 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Jodie Luther (14 pts) and Caroline Bernal-Silva (10 pts, 8 reb) also reached double digits for Rochester.

Danahy's three three minutes into the game put the Herons up 8-2, but the Yellowjackets went on a 15-2 run to seize a seven-point lead. William Smith scored the next eight points to reclaim the lead, 18-17, with 7:12 left in the first half.

The teams traded the lead back and forth over the next five minutes before Rochester scored the final six points of the half to carry a 29-25 lead into the break.

The Herons stayed close to the Yellowjackets in the second half, never trailing by more than nine until the final 20 seconds, but William Smith never reclaimed the lead. The Herons used nine unanswered points to erase a 53-44 Yellowjacket lead with 5:14 remaining, but the visitors countered with a 10-1 run to push their lead to nine again. William Smith wasn't able to get closer than seven down in the final two minutes.

The Herons will be back in action on Dec. 19, when they visit Cortland. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
