Box Score SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team broke the program record for three-pointers made in a season, but Union spoiled the performance with an 84-73 victory. The Statesmen sank 11 triples to raise their season total to 188, seven more than the 2004-05 squad's standard.
Sophomore guards
Rob Estep,
Tim Llewellyn, and
Mark Bruce led Hobart. Estep was the high scorer with 26 points on 11-of-20 shooting, including three threes. Llewellyn added 11 points, six steals, and four assists, while Bruce produced 10 points. First-year forward Mark Bertucci grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Steve Madej paced four Dutchmen in double digits with 26 points, including five threes, while Drew Desmarais chipped in 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Statesmen (8-16, 5-8 Liberty League) shot 42 percent from the floor for the game, draining 10 of 22 three-point attempts in the second half. Union (13-10, 6-7) shot 55.6 percent, including 70.4 percent in the second half. The Dutchmen also had a decisive advantage at the free throw line, making nearly twice as many freebies (15) as Hobart attempted (8).
Bruce scored the game's first basket, but Union countered with 12 straight points to take control of the game. The Statesmen battled back, getting within four, 28-24, by halftime.
Early in the second half, Hobart climbed out of a six-point hole with a 13-2 run, capped by a Llewellyn three, to take its largest lead of the game, 42-37. The Dutchmen answered with 18 unanswered points to put the contest out of reach.
The Statesmen will wrap up the regular season on Feb. 21, when they visit Skidmore (7-17, 2-11). Hobart is in fifth place in the conference. To make the four-team Liberty League, Hobart has to beat the Thoroughbreds and Hamilton must beat Union. That would put the Statesmen in a three-way tie with Union and the winner of the Vassar at Clarkson game and activate the league's multiple step tie-breaker.
