POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team finished fourth in the Liberty League Championship after falling to St. Lawrence 6-3 today. The Herons finish their season with an 11-6 overall record.
All three of William Smith's victories came in singles action. First-year
Joanie Hilton (Shady Side Academy/Pittsburgh, Pa.) played at No. 4, earning a 6-2, 6-7, 10-6 win over the Saints' Elizabeth Karam. Sophomore
Melissa Slack (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) took the fifth match vs. Chelsea Hubbell 7-5, 6-2, while first-year
Jess McCue (Oneonta/Oneonta, N.Y.) downed Barry Edgar 6-2, 2-6, 10-6 at No. 6. Slack was the only Heron to win all three singles matches she played in the tournament, and now owns a team-best 18-6 individual mark.
In doubles action, senior
Chelsea Rauck (Columbus School for Girls/Bexley, Ohio) and Hilton lost a close match at No. 1 to Stephanie Finn and Casey Gilman, 8-6. First-year
Casey Kennedy (Lake Forest Academy/Kenliworth, Ill.) and McCue had a similar outcome at No. 3, falling to Edgar and Hubbell by the same score.
