Box Score CANTON, N.Y.—William Smith was outscored 29-10 at the free throw line as St. Lawrence scored an 84-68 Liberty League women's basketball victory. With the win, the Saints improve to 11-5, 3-3 in the conference, while the Herons fall to 5-11, 1-5.
William Smith outscored St. Lawrence from the field, 58-55, but the Saints earned 36 trips to the free throw line, making 29. The Herons were just 10-of-14 from the line.
Ashlinn Barber led William Smith with her fifth double-double of the season. She produced 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Julie Hooper and
Mollie Danahy also contributed 15 points, while
Kristen Kush chipped in 12 points.
Iris Santoni paced St. Lawrence with a game-high 23 points and a game-high seven assists. Casey Capello, Katherine Edgerton, and Nyasha Miller scored 16, 15, and 12 points, respectively.
Barely six minutes into the contest, the Saints had built a 20-12 lead, but Hooper drained a three, sparking a 12-0 Heron run. In fact, William Smith's lone senior accounted for 10 of her team's 12 points during the surge.
St. Lawrence retook the lead with a 12-2 run and carried a 44-36 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Saints extended their lead to 12 with the period's first four points and led by 60-49 with 10:15 remaining in the contest. A 12-2 push by the Herons cut their deficit to just one, 62-61. Kush netted eight points during the run.
St. Lawrence quelled the threat with eight unanswered points and sank 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
