Statesmen take down conference front-running Knights 67-58

Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y.—Stefan Thompson scored a game-high 21 points, dished out a team-high three assists, and made a team high-three steals to lead Hobart to a 67-58 Liberty League men's basketball victory over Clarkson this afternoon. He finished the game 5-of-11 from the floor (1-of-2 from long range) and 10-of-12 from the free throw line.

Matt Pebole joined Thompson in double figures with 15 points, a team-high eight rebounds, and three steals. Tim Llewellyn chipped in nine points, six rebounds, and three assist.

Clarkson (10-7, 4-3) got 21 points and a game-high 10 rebounds from Jonathan Hood. Felix Llanos chipped in 13 points, while Elson Pickering grabbed 10 boards to go with six points.

Neither team shot particularly well—the Golden Knights hit on just 39.3 percent and Hobart 36.1 percent—but the Statesmen did a better job of taking care of the basketball. Hobart forced 22 CU turnovers, while making 14 of their own. That led the Statesmen to a 24-12 advantage in points off turnovers. And, despite being outrebounded 43-36, Hobart (10-8, 3-4) enjoyed a 17-10 edge in second chance points.

Hood's first points of the game gave Clarkson a 4-2 lead. It proved to be the home team's only advantage of the contest. The Statesmen scored the next three field goals of the game to build a five-point edge and never looked back. An 8-0 run late in the frame allowed Hobart to inflate its lead to 10, 28-18, 3:16 before the break. The Statesmen led by as many as 11 down the stretch and carried a 33-23 lead into halftime.

Llanos led all scorers with eight points in the first half as all 23 points by the Knights came from their five starters. Hobart got 25 of its 33 points from its starters as five different players, including reserve Greg Stern, had at least five points for the Statesmen.

In the second half, the Knights started getting offensive contributions from their bench as Tyler Barron and George Koduah scored on back-to-back possessions, pulling Clarkson to within three points, 41-38. The Knights kept the gap to three for a handful of possessions, but midway through the period, Hobart enjoyed a 10-2 run over a three-minute span to take a double-digit lead with less than seven minutes remaining. Thompson keyed the push with five points.

Down the stretch, the Knights were unable to get back to within striking distance as Thompson maintained the margin by making eight of his 10 free throw attempts in the final three minutes.

Hobart will be back in action on Feb. 5 when the Statesmen host Union. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 8 p.m.
