Rochester powers past Herons 85-51

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—
The Rochester basketball team made good use of its height advantage over William Smith, posting an 85-51 victory in the semifinals of the Wendy's College Classic at Roberts Wesleyan. The Yellowjackets outscored the Herons 44-24 in the paint.

William Smith (2-3) got a game-high 16 points from junior forward Kristen Kush, while first-year guard Liz Douglass added nine points. First-year guard Jacqueline Murphy collected a team-high eight rebounds to go with four points and three steals.

Twin 13-point performances Jodie Luther (6-foot-1) and Danielle McNabb (6-foot-1) paced Rochester (5-1). Loren Wagner (6-foot) added 10 points, while Melissa Alwardt (5-foot-9) added a game-high 10 rebounds, six points, and a game-high five assists.

The Yellowjackets got off to a good start, outscoring the Herons 10-2. Midway through the opening half, the lead was 21-13, but William Smith rattled off the next eight points, including four from Douglass, to tie the game.

Laney Ming hit a three for Rochester to stop the run and ignite an 11-0 surge by the Yellowjackets. Rochester carried a 46-31 lead into halftime.

The Yellowjackets made four unanswered layups to start the second half, pushing their lead to 54-31 and effectively putting the game out of reach.

Rochester shot 54.7 percent from the floor, including six three-pointers, while holding William Smith to just 28.3 percent shooting. The Yellowjackets outrebounded the Herons 46-33.

William Smith will face Geneseo at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4 at Roberts Wesleyan in the Wendy's Classic third place game. Rochester will battle Roberts Wesleyan for the title.
