CANTON, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team defeated Union 9-0 in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament this morning at Newell Field House. The Herons improve to 13-4 overall and advance to the semifinal round, while the Dutchwomen drop to 3-10 on the season.
At No. 1 singles, junior
Amanda Slack battled back after dropping the first set (5-7) to Hallie Mabrey. She rallied to win the second set and the tiebreak 6-4, 10-6. First-year
Hallsey Leighton outlasted Liz Lehmann to take the sixth singles match 6-2, 3-6, 10-8, while sophomore
Joanie Hilton, junior
Melissa Slack, first-year
Remy Raevsky, and senior
Shari Damon all recorded two-set victories at Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively.
The Herons swept the doubles matches as well. Hilton and sophomore
Jess McCue teamed up to defeat Mabrey and Elise Malkin at No. 1, 8-5. The Slack sisters won 8-1 at No. 2, and Raevsky joined sophomore
Katie Serock for an 8-1 victory at No. 3.
Third-seeded William Smith will take on second-seeded Skidmore (10-7) in the Liberty League Tournament semifinal round today at 2 p.m.
