Herons crack DIII top 20

The William Smith field hockey team cracked the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll this week, debuting at No. 19. The Herons ran their record to 4-0 with a 6-0 win over previously unbeaten Oneonta on Saturday.

In the first two weeks of the season, William Smith has featured a high-powered offense and a suffocating defense. The Herons have outscored their opponents 22-2 and Emily Atwan, Kiersten Hamilton, and Taylor Cappello rank first, second, and third, respectively, in the Liberty League in points. Goalies Chelsea Snyder and Taryn Little have split time and rank first (0.00) and third (0.84) in the conference in goals against average.

William Smith will host a potent Ithaca (3-1) squad tonight at 7 p.m. Fans can follow the match online with Live Stats and All-Access Video.

The Herons will face the first of six ranked opponents on their 2010 slate on Sunday, Sept. 19, when No. 17 Franklin & Marshall visits McCooey Field.
