GENEVA, N.Y.—Junior forward
Matt Pebole became the 22nd player in the 101-season history of Hobart College basketball to surpass the 1,000-point plateau, but visiting St. Lawrence University left Bristol Gym with an 80-77 overtime victory. Pebole logged a team-high 17 points to raise his career total to 1,011.
The Saints (8-8, 4-2) got a game-high 28 points from junior Ralph Temgoua as well as eight rebounds and a game-high five steals. Classmate Garrett Sharlow contributed 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while sophomores Kyle Miller and Nick Meunier chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
For the Statesmen (13-4, 5-1), sophomore
Stefan Thompson notched a double-double on 12 points and 10 rebounds, while first-year
Blair Helton added 16 points off the bench.
The rematch of last season's Liberty League Championship game was hotly contested. The lead changed hands 10 times and the score was tied 12 times, including three times in overtime. Pebole's jumper with 59 seconds remaining in the contest forged the final tie, 76-76.
Thirteen seconds later, Sharlow made a pair of free throws to put the visitors in front for good. Hobart turned the ball over and had to foul. The Saints missed both freebies. The Statesmen misfired from the floor and fouled again. This time Temgoua netted both tries to make it a four-point game. St. Lawrence fouled Thompson with nine seconds to go. He sank the first, but missed the second. Fortunately, Pebole grabbed the rebound, but Hobart's final 3-point try was off the mark, ending the team's seven-game winning streak.
In the second half, the Statesmen took a 13-point lead on Pebole's tip-in at the 15:55 mark, but Hobart went more than 10 minutes without a field goal. The Saints' 18-2 run during that drought put them in front by five, 61-56.
The lead was still five with 1:35 to go, but Helton made it a 2-point game with one of his game-high four 3-pointers. He tied the game with a pair of free throws with 34 seconds remaining to force overtime. St. Lawrence turned the ball over with three ticks to go and Thompson wasn't able to get off a half-court heave before the buzzer.
St. Lawrence won the battle of the boards 41-35 and made 31-of-40 from the free throw line, while the Statesmen were just 16-of-24.
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 29, when Clarkson visits town. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Saints will play at the same time at Hamilton.
