GENEVA, N.Y.—The top-ranked St. Lawrence men's soccer team scored its first goal in the 16th minute, and added two more goals late in the second half to defeat No. 17 Hobart 3-0 in a Liberty League match played on Cozzens Field this afternoon.
The Saints remain unbeaten with an 11-0-0 overall mark, and a 4-0-0 record in Liberty League play. The Statesmen (10-2-0, 2-2-0 Liberty) suffered their second loss of the year.
Hobart came out strong with a scoring opportunity in the very first seconds of the match. Junior
Will Abbott sent a pass ahead to senior
Tony Yeboah, who had broken through the Saints defense for a one-on-one with the keeper. The pass was just out of Yeboah's reach, and St. Lawrence's goalie, Brian Abernethy, was able to get his hands on the ball, just before Yeboah could get a shot off.
The Saints got on the scoreboard 15:35 into the game when Andrew Bednarsky scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Sam DeMello. Bednarsky placed a shot into the far right corner of the goal, just out of reach of Statesmen keeper senior
Charlie Hale. The remainder of the first half was evenly played with each team taking three shots.
In the second half, Hobart came out hungry. In the 62nd minute, first-year
Ryan Lotzar put on shot on goal, but the Saints' keeper Brian Abernethy came running out of the net to make the save. Under a minute later, Yeboah drilled a shot that went just wide of the right post.
St. Lawrence broke open the game, capitalizing on a corner kick in the 75th minute. JJ Tipton took the corner and sent the ball into the box. Alex Laird was there to redirect the ball into the goal on a header to make it 2-0. Brian Gilloran scored his sixth goal of the year in the 83rd minute for the final margin. Jamal Samaroo put a shot on goal, but Hale was able to knock it away. Gilloran collected the rebound and sent the ball into the back of the net through a crowd in front of the goal.
Hale finished with four saves in all 90 minutes in goal for Hobart. St. Lawrence's Abernethy also recorded four saves to earn his eighth shutout this fall. The Saints held a 14-11 edge in shots and an 8-5 lead in corner kicks.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Monday, Oct. 10, when they travel to take on Nazareth in a non-conference game beginning at 4 p.m.
