GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team fell to RIT 2-0 in a Liberty League tournament semifinal played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The ninth-ranked Statesmen are now 16-3-0 this season, and the Tigers improve to 11-6-2.
RIT advances to the Liberty League tournament championship game where the Tigers will meet the winner of the St. Lawrence-Vassar semifinal. That match will be played at St. Lawrence tomorrow, and the highest remaining seed will host the championship.
The Statesmen will now have to wait and see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The championship committee will meet on Sunday, Nov. 6 and the tournament pairings will be announced on Monday, Nov. 7.
In the first half, the game was played predominantly in the midfield. The Statesmen picked up momentum towards the end of the opening half. Hobart fired five shots in the final 17 minutes before halftime, but all of them were blocked by RIT defenders.
The Tigers came out strong after halftime. Darryl Anderson ripped a shot that went just wide of the left post in the opening seconds of the half. The Tigers broke the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute. Anderson took a shot that was blocked by a Statesmen defender. Jimmy Forbes collected the rebound and sent a shot into the back of the net through a crowd in front of the goal to make it 1-0.
In the 77th minute, Dan Holowaty added to the RIT lead with his seventh goal of the season. Holowaty stole the ball from a Hobart defender in the box and drilled a shot into the goal to make it 2-0.
The Statesmen had a few opportunities to get on the scoreboard late in the game. Hobart earned three corners kicks in the final 5:09, but could not capitalize. In the final minute, sophomore
Eli Vitale put a shot on goal that was headed away by an RIT defender. Senior
Tony Yeboah also fired a shot on goal in the final seconds, but the Tigers' goalie Ben Frazier was there to make the save.
Frazier finished with four stops, earning his first win of the season. Senior
Charlie Hale made four saves in all 90 minutes in goal for Hobart. The Statesmen held a 14-12 edge in shots and a 6-2 lead in corner kicks.
