HENRIETTA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team lost to nationally ranked Rochester 67-55 in the semifinals of the
Wendy's College Classic at RIT tonight. The Herons held the unbeaten Yellowjackets to their lowest shooting percentage and lowest scoring total of the season, but scored a season low themselves.
Junior
Sydni Salvatore scored a game-high 16 points, canning 4-of-9 from behind the 3-point arc, for William Smith (2-2). Sophomore
Liz Douglass added 15 points, a game-high three steals, and five assists, sharing game-high honors for the latter with junior
Jaimie Rubin. Sophomore
Jacqueline Murphy pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Loren Wagner paced three Rochester players in double figures with 13 points. Jodie Luther chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds and Laney Ming netted 10 points. The Yellowjackets (6-0) dominated the boards, outrebounding the Herons 51-39. Amy Woods collected 10 off the glass for the UofR, which is ranked eighth in the USA Today/WBCA preseason poll and fifth in the latest D3hoops.com poll.
After Douglass gave William Smith an early 6-2 lead, Rochester rattled off 16 unanswered points to build a 12-point lead. The Herons cut that deficit in half with 5:31 remaining in the first half, but the Yellowjackets ended the half on a 16-4 run.
The UofR led 38-20 at halftime.
The Yellowjackets led by as many as 24 in the second half before the Herons used a 12-2 run late in the game to close the gap to just 10 with 45 seconds remaining, but got no closer.
William Smith will square off with RIT in the third place game of the Wendy's Classic at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. Rochester will battle Roberts Wesleyan in the title game.
